What is a crown?

Protecting and restoring teeth

A dental crown is a custom-made cap placed over a damaged or weakened tooth. It protects the tooth, restores its natural shape and strengthens it for everyday use. Crowns are often recommended when fillings are not enough.

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth using the surrounding teeth as support. Bridges restore your bite, prevent the remaining teeth from shifting, and improve your ability to chew and speak.

A bridge can be fixed to natural teeth or dental implants, offering a stable and lasting solution for missing teeth.

When a crown may help

Common reasons for a crown

  • Large cavities or fillings

When a tooth has been heavily filled or has a cavity too large for a normal filling.

  • Cosmetic improvement

Covers discoloured, misshapen or worn teeth.

  • Severe acid erosion

Protects what remains of a tooth worn down by acid or reflux.

  • Cracked teeth

Preserves cracked teeth before the damage gets worse.

Good to know first

Questions about crowns and bridges

Ask us on WhatsApp
Why might I need a crown after a root canal?

After root canal therapy, teeth become more brittle, so a crown is placed to prevent fracture and ensure long-term function.

What is a bridge?

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth using surrounding teeth or dental implants as support.

How do I look after my crowns and bridges?

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily (including under the bridge), avoid biting hard objects, and visit us every 6 months for check-ups and professional cleaning.

Can children have crowns?

Yes. For heavily decayed baby teeth, a stainless steel crown may be used, as a bridge is not suitable.
