About dental implants

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once it has bonded with the bone, a custom crown is attached to it.

Implants can support a single tooth or several teeth, and can also help stabilise a bridge or a denture.

Not everyone is suitable for implants. Bone quality, gum health and general health are assessed first.

Options

Ways implants can be used

Single tooth implant

One implant with a crown to replace a single missing tooth.

Multiple tooth implants

Several implants supporting a bridge to replace more than one tooth.

Implant-supported dentures

Implants that help stabilise a denture for a more secure fit.

Ways implants can be used

Who may benefit

When implants may be considered

An assessment will confirm whether implants are right for you.

  • Missing teeth

To replace one or more missing teeth.

  • Protecting neighbouring teeth

An implant does not require the adjacent teeth to be reduced, unlike some bridges.

  • Support for dentures

To improve the stability and comfort of a denture.

  • Healthy bone and gums

Sufficient bone and healthy gums are needed for implant placement.

Care and comfort

Before, during and after

Your dentist will explain the healing time and follow-up for your situation.

  • Local anaesthesia is used during placement, so the procedure is comfortable.
  • Some swelling or soreness is common for a few days.
  • Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups help the implant last.
